The Catholic social teaching on human dignity is both a beautiful blessing – and a tremendous challenge.
Blessing – because we believe in the infinite dignity and worth of every human being. Why? Because we are wonderfully made in the image of God. Our ability to love, to forgive, to show compassion, to think, to laugh – are all reflections of the love, forgiveness, compassion, intelligence and humor of God.
Challenge – because we are called to respect and honor the dignity of each and every person we meet. No exceptions. No one is unworthy or undeserving of our respect – not the homeless person, not the criminal, not the person we just can’t stand to be around. Each and every person is truly a brother or sister to me.
