As the days and weeks drag on in anticipation of the decision of the Michael Brown grand jury, I find myself thinking more and more, “I just want this to be over.” But the more I think about it, I don’t want it to be over. The killing of Michael Brown has opened a racial wound in Ferguson, the St. Louis region and the country as a whole that needed to be opened. If the death of Michael Brown is not to be in vain, we all need to take a look at how we view each other and feel about each other, and we all need to work together to reduce race prejudice and injustice in America. This tragedy is an opportunity – to make our community better, more just – and ultimately more peaceful.
